Mom's UFOs

So I spent a few hours at Mom's house the other day. I was planning on washing her windows, but she didn't want me to. Since I had planned on being at her home for a couple of hours I suggested we make room in a drawer for all of her quilting UFOs as they were currently residing in the middle of the bed in the guest room.

So after cleaning out a drawer full of old greeting cards (she is still sorting through them), we sorted these UFOs that Mom no longer wants to work on. You need to know that Mom does not use a sewing machine. Each of these have been hand-stitched. She joined a quilt group at our church when she was in her late 70s. She had never quilted prior to that.
This is a baby quilt that she began at the quilt group that used to meet at our church. Mom started quilting it, but for some reason she really doesn't like it. I happen to think it is quite pretty so I took it home to finish quilting.
Mom actually likes this, but is no longer in the mood to quilt. She is 89 and her hands are quite arthritic. I took this top, the backing fabric and the batting home. It isn't large so perhaps I can quilt it this winter while watching TV. Mom usually quilts with embroidery floss so I may just follow her lead.
Mom has the pattern, but she doesn't remember what she planned to do with these blocks. She has enough fabric to make at least one more so I think this must have been destined for a wall quilt or a table runner. Guess what?! I took all the fabric home and may work on it someday. Those baskets don't thrill me, so they may stay stored for quite some time.
Lastly, we came across this little table topper. How sad that all it needs is the binding to be sewn on those two sides. I am joining Kathy for some Slow Sunday Stitching and this will be my Sunday stitching project. It may end up staying at my house, because Mom only has one room with blue and doesn't know where she would put it.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. That little baby quilt is darling...glad that you are going to work on it and figure out what to do with some of the other things. And wasn't that much nicer than washing windows!!! :)

  3. How neat to be able to finish some of your mother's ufo's. I don't look forward to reaching the age that I can no longer stitch. I know my mom had to stop knitting in her 80s and she missed it everyday.

  6. They are some sweet projects. I'm curious, since I am a hand quilter, how many strands of embroidery floss does your mother use when she used to hand quilt? Thanks, Gretchen villacrestfarm@gmail.com

  9. I see you inherited your mom's love of crafting. She is quite talented and sifting through quilt tops is way way better than window washing!!

  10. How lovely that you are finishing off what your mum started, so these will end up being collaborations. I think the baby quilt is very appealing.

  12. Those are some really lovely quilts. I hope you'll have time to finish them off. With the little baskets, could you make them into coasters or tiles? Maybe add embroidery in the center to make them slightly different from each other?

I don't envy the job your mother has of looking through her cards. I had some from when I was a little girl that I had to go through when we moved. It was extremely difficult to get rid of them, even though all they do is live in a drawer. I kept one at least from any relative that had passed on.

  13. How great to discover all of these projects made by your mom - it must have been a walk down memory lane for her. If you have one or two that you know you'll never finish you might want to check out Cynthia's Quilty Orphan Adoption that starts September 16. She holds it every spring and fall so that she and others can put up for adoption items to be finished up by others - here's a link to more information about it: http://quiltingismorefunthanhousework.blogspot.ca/2016/08/oh-scrap-quilty-orphan-adoption-event.html
