First March Stitch Along Update

Three weeks have passed since our last update. A lot has happened in those 21 days. The Olympics were wonderful to watch each day and are, sadly, over now. Here on Long Island we had a blizzard that dumped 29 inches of snow last Sunday into Monday. This is my back yard. That is a 6 foot fence with bushes covered in drifts. 

That snow was followed by another inch or 2 on Wednesday. Ugh! We only saw the green grass for one day after the early February snow storm before this blizzard arrived. You would think that I did a whole lot of stitching on Three Boats, but I don't work on it in front of the television. I like to listen to music when I stitch this as I need to carefully count where the stitches need to be placed. I don't really have to pay attention to the music.

This is where I am now. 

I filled in a lot of different blue flosses. There are more to work on still. I had hoped to finish the page I am working on by the end of February, but now I am aiming for the end of March.

Snow Again?

 It rained all day on Friday. It didn’t quite wash away all the snow from four weeks ago. Yes, there has been snow on the ground on Long Island for all that time. I have lived here all of my 65 years and don’t remember snow on the ground for that long ever. The weather prediction is for more snow on Sunday and Monday. Really?! Ugh. 

Of course, having Olympics on the TV from early morning to late night all day every day has helped me to deal with the decidedly depressing weather. It has also contributed to great progress on my crafts. 

The background of Having a Ball is almost 3/4 quilted. I have a nice rhythm going with it now. 

The second sock is well on its way to completion. The heel is done and I’m heading toward the toe. 

I looked in my stash and found this pretty bamboo sock yarn.

I can’t wait to start another pair. I want a different pattern. If anyone has a favorite, please share it with me. 

The I-Spy quilt sandwich is pinned and ready for me to begin machine quilting. 

I finished reading The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches.

I liked this book and would recommend it. I wouldn't say it was an exceptional book to read, but it was certainly enjoyable and the characters were interesting. I just started reading The Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel. I don't have an opinion of it as yet.

Olympic crafting

I love watching as many Olympic sports as possible. Skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, speed skating, curling! They are so much fun! Since I am still dealing with a head cold, I haven’t been feeling like leaving the house and venturing out into the cold weather. The Olympics are a great distraction. We are no longer in the deep freeze, but it is still Winter and the snow that fell three weeks ago is still on the ground. 

My days have been spent drinking lots of fluids, watching TV as well as quilting or knitting. The background of Having a Ball is about halfway quilted. 

I am really enjoying the process. I’m pleased with the quilting. 

The first of two socks is completed. It is not perfect, but it fits. 

The second sock is well on its way and is definitely looking better than the first. I can see myself knitting more socks in the future with a better yarn. This yarn is somewhat scratchy, but it is a good yarn for a first try.

 One of my few outings this week was to a local quilt shop to get fabric to back the I-Spy quilt. It is the same fabric that I used for the other two I-Spy quilts that I made. 

Hubby’s birthday was on Thursday. It was a small celebration.

February Stitch Along Update

I can tell you that I would love to be on the beach below right now. I woke up to single digit Fahrenheit temps this morning with a windchill below zero. This bitterly cold weather that we have been experiencing for well over a week here on Long Island has at least been beneficial to my progress on Three Boats. I have no interest in braving the frigid, windy weather outside. This is where Three Boats was in January.

 I have finished all of the black stitching for a while and have started on the blue sky. 

It is so much more fun to stitch with pretty colors. I am thinking that I may be able to get close to finishing the page I am on by the end of this month. That would be a score!

Indecision and Olympics!

For some unknown reason, at the beginning of this week I had trouble deciding which craft to work on first each day. I know, that isn't a problem really, but I was wondering about my indecision. I like all the crafts I currently have and they are all progressing quite well. As the week went on I came down with a cold so I think that contributed to what I felt like working on. Also the bitterly cold weather that we are still experiencing didn't make me want to work on my sewing machine in the basement. There are two heating vents down there, but it really can't be called warm. 

I did make it down to the basement though for a brief time on two days to work on the borders for the I-Spy quilt. Here is the finished flimsy! It is 45 inches square.

I was hoping to make a trip to a fabric store on Friday to find fabric to back it, but I felt really run down with quite the froggy voice. I would like to machine quilt this and bind it for my granddaughter's first birthday in March. 

The cross hatching on Having a Ball is quilting up quickly. I have about 1/4 of the stitching done.

Hubby and I have been watching the Olympics! I always enjoy watching the variety of sports for several days. Of course, the quilting and sock knitting are perfect for TV watching. 

Speaking of sock knitting, I am still working on the first sock. Getting closer to the toe. 

I am hoping I have enough yarn, but I can always make the toe a different color.

We visited my daughter and her family last weekend. My daughter's birthday was on that Friday. It was very cold so working on a puzzle is a good indoor activity.

 There was quite a lot of snow up in Boston. More than here on Long Island which is still hanging around as we are stuck in the deep freeze. 

I stopped reading Daughters of Victory by Gabriella Saab. I found it very, very dark and kept dreading picking the book up to read. I am not going to waste my time on something I am not enjoying. Instead, I picked up a book I got for Christmas: The Seven Rings by Nora Roberts. It is the 3rd book of the Lost Brides Trilogy that I have been anticipating for quite some time. It is not disappointing. I am just breezing through it.

Snow days crafting

It has been bitterly cold here since last weekend’s snowstorm. We had about 12 inches of snow. 

Thankfully we didn’t get the massive amount of ice the other places experienced. 

We are expected to stay below freezing for the next 10 days or so and have been so since last weekend. I’m staying warm and cozy in my house except for grocery shopping. Of course that means I have tons of time to craft and I have been busy. 

The ball shape on Having a Ball has been quilted! 

On Tuesday I marked the cross-hatching for the background. 

I started the quilting on Wednesday. I think this will go fairly quickly. 

During the snowstorm on Sunday, I hunkered down in my basement and finished sewing the I-Spy quilt together. I love it! 

Now I am cutting colorful squares to make a border around the edges.

There will be 4 more 9 patches in the corners and a white square next to each of the other 9 patches. The quilt should end up about 45” square. 

The heel and gusset have been completed on my sock and I am now knitting the foot.

 I’m enjoying this. I hope the resulting sock fits nicely.

PS: the commenting problem is mine as I have a new computer. My ability to comment on my own posts is blocked. I need to confer with hubby as to whether the permissioning solution is safe. I will try to use my old computer to comment, but it can be slow and balky lately. Hence the new computer. 

Snow!

 Well, there’s no snow as I am writing this, but we are expected to get socked with 10-14 inches starting on Sunday. There is also a chance for freezing rain and/or sleet. We are as ready as we will ever be. Just hoping the power stays on. We have someone who comes to do the shoveling/snow blowing. 

If the power stays on I will probably be at my sewing machine in the basement. I cut out all the necessary fabric for my younger granddaughter’s I-Spy quilt. Here is the layout. It will be about 42 inches square before a border is added.

I’ve sewn all the rows that have the nine patch blocks. I am working on the rows with the 4 patch novelty fabric blocks. 

This quilt will soon be a flimsy and ready to sandwich and machine quilt. I wonder if I have any batting for it? Hmm...

There are only 2 “blocks” left to hand quilt on Having a Ball. I’m not looking forward to quilting the small navy block. I’m going to work on it next so that the last block to quilt is the easy pink one. 

My first sock attempt is going well. I was so proud of myself when I knit the heel flap and turned the gusset. Even more proud when I picked up stitches and connected them to the main part of the sock. 

I did watch a few videos to help me understand the written instructions. 

I made my first recipe from the America's Test Kitchen cookbook I received as a Christmas gift. It was just a basic roasted chicken thigh recipe and it was delicious. I must admit that, although I love to bake, I really don't like to cook. This was an easy recipe, but drama ensued. Since the bone-in skin-on thighs were cooked on a preheated sheet pan in a fairly hot oven, they gave off a whole lot of grease. When I opened the oven to turn them over as directed there was a lot of smoke that set off the smoke alarm in the hallway next to the kitchen. That was easily dealt with by waving a towel under it and then opening a window. At least we confirmed that our smoke alarm system is working. Of course, said smoke alarm decided it would start chirping at 11:30 that night. Hubby got up and changed the battery without much drama thankfully. The next day saw me putting the oven racks in cleaning solution overnight and setting the oven to self-clean. Although the recipe was delicious, I am not sure I will be making it again any time soon. 

I finished reading The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness.

 It was fantastic! As interesting and fast moving as the first book of the series. Supposedly there is a 6th book on the way. I am so looking forward to reading it. I'm not sure what book I will read next.

First Stitch Along update of 2026

It has been 6 weeks since our last update in 2025 and I must admit that I only worked on Three Boats just this past week. That's okay, since I finished the full coverage cross-stitch Christmas stocking for my youngest granddaughter, I have much more time to devote to stitching this project in the future. This is how Three Boats on a Tropical Beach looked in December.

 I have finally started adding some color this week. Here is how it looks now.

Progress and a finish

January crafting is well on its way. Having A Ball has a mere 6 more blocks to be quilted. I finished the two I was working on for my last update (red and orange) and have started the next two. The centers of the blue and rose blocks are quilted as is some of the rest of the rose colored block.

I finished the hat that I was knitting for myself. It goes well with my navy winter coat.

Needing another yarn craft to work on, I started knitting a pair of socks, or at least the first sock. I bought this yarn on clearance years ago with the plan of using cheap yarn to attempt to make socks. So far things are going well, but I feel like I’m knitting with toothpicks. 

I bought the white on white fabric needed for my latest I-Spy quilt for my younger granddaughter. I spent Friday sewing 1 1/2” strips and squares into the parts needed for 30 9 patch blocks. 

I’m almost there. I still have to finish sewing the center row for each block which will be two white squares with a color in between. 

Hubby bought me this cookbook for Christmas though it just arrived this week.

 We were both surprised by the weight of this massive tome. There are over 1000 pages! We watch America’s Test Kitchen most evenings. I had been hinting for quite a while that I would like the cookbook for Christmas. Now I have to try some of these recipes!

I finished reading Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher. Though I found the beginning a little slow, I’m glad I stuck with it, because it was soon a book that I didn’t want to put down.

 I’m currently reading The Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness. I love a good witch/vampire book. So far it is living up to my high expectations.This is the 5th book of what started as a trilogy. I reread the other 4 books to refresh my memory of the intricate family interactions and now I am looking forward to losing myself in this book.

I woke up very, very early one morning this past week and saw a pretty sunrise from our front windows. You can also see the sliver of the moon near the top of the tree. Such pretty colors.

This photo definitely gives the cold winter day vibe.

Looking Ahead

I’m still recovering and cleaning up after having 4 adults, 3 toddlers and one canine as houseguests for 8 days. I have almost finished putting away our Christmas decorations. I finished another donation hat, but forgot to take a photo before giving all the hats to a friend to donate. I started another hat. This one is for me.

I donated the previous blue hat that I had considered keeping for myself. 

Since there has been very little crafting happening this past week, I decided to make a list of the crafts I hope to work on/complete in 2026. 

Let me start with what WIPs I would like to finish. 

Having a Ball is well on its way to completion. There should be plenty of time for hand quilting over the next couple of months.

The Royal Squares quilt needs to be sandwiched, pinned and machine quilted. I’m not sure when that will happen, but it is on the list to be completed this year. 

Cinnamon House has become my travel craft. I would like to work on it more once Having a Ball is done. 

Finishing the Summer Oak Embroidery is long, long overdue. That is on the list also. 

Three Boats will be a continuous WIP. I have no illusions that it will be completed this year. 

So what projects do I want to start. I want to make my youngest granddaughter an I-Spy quilt. This is sort of a WIP as I have cut out the squares of novelty fabrics, but nothing else is cut and fabric may need to be bought. 

In July I will start making Christmas ornaments for my grandchildren. I think I will make them from this kit. 

I also want to make myself the last Mill Hill Santa face kit that I have. 

I’m debating starting to knit a pair of socks for myself once I finish my hat. I have yarn all ready to go. I’ve never made socks before. 

Other possible crafts this year are this Hankerchief quilt. 

I have several handkerchiefs from my mom and from when I was a kid. 

This Snow Globe cross stitch that is all kitted up ready to make. 

This Candy Cane Santa kit the my son gifted me several years ago. 

I would also like to try my hand at making either a macrame style or machine sewn rope basket. 

I have so many crafts, quilts, cross stitch patterns as well as knit and crochet patterns that I am itching to work on. Sometimes I find it overwhelming to think about. I also need to go through my extensive collection of old craft magazines and pamphlets and purge what I doubt I will ever work on. 

I didn’t receive any crafts as gifts for Christmas this year. That is probably a good thing, but my daughter did buy me this wonderful wine glass. 

It says Sip by Sip, Stitch by Stitch. It is just perfect for me.
