Hot and cold stitching

I spent some time Friday stitching on my front porch as the weather was a balmy 60 something degrees and my porch faces the sun.

I added some grey stitching to the Santa stocking.

It was a gorgeously sunny day! Then there was Saturday when the temperature hovered around 40 all day and it was breezy. I cozied up in my living room and added some more grey stitches to Santa as well as some stitches that show his face taking shape.

I needed to get away from stitching so much grey. Although I did make quite a bit of progress adding a bunch of lighter grey stitches also, especially around the ball of Santa's hat.

I also spent some time this week adding some sparse stitching to the secret piece. You won't see the whole piece until it is stitched, framed and gifted.
Obviously there is a saying on this piece.

I am happy to say that my mom, Hubby and I all got our first COVID vaccine this week. The second dose is in 3 weeks! Two weeks after that we can safely say that we are somewhat protected. We will still be wearing our masks and social distancing as well as avoiding stores and restaurants. I don't think that life will return to what was normal before this pandemic for quite some time, if ever. With new variants emerging so frequently, I plan on continuing with the established routines to stay safe.

Mom has been a little more normal this week. Thank goodness. I on the other hand am having a hard time sleeping. I go to bed at her house and fall right to sleep (usually), but I wake up at 4 or 4:30 am and can not get back to sleep. I stay awake until at least 11, because Mom has been waking with a nightmare most nights sometime between 9:30 and 11:30 pm. I have only been getting 5 or so hours of sleep a night and I am toast.

I have finished reading "Practical Magic" by Alice Hoffman. I think I have tried reading this book before and didn't much like it. I basically skimmed the book this time the whole way through. I didn't like it this time either. I was about to move on to the unabridged version of "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. I did start it, but I just don't feel like reading a 400 page book at this time. So, I have also started "First Frost" by Sarah Addison Allen. This is the second book in the Waverly Sisters of Bascom novels. I am enjoying this book much more than either of the other two.

I am joining Kathy for some Slow Sunday Stitching. Pop on over to her site to see what other bloggers are stitching. I think I will add a few stitches to Three Boats today.

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. You have been under a lot of stress lately...no wonder you have trouble sleeping! I hope that you are able to get more sleep soon. Santa is slowly emerging...it’s fun to see the details as you stitch.

  4. One thing the hospice social worker told me when I was taking care of my mom. "It's like they tell you on the airline safety brief - secure your own mask before helping others". Take care of yourself - maybe some nap time? Good luck. (And Santa is looking good, you can certainly see the shape of the face starting to emerge.)

  5. hope you are able to get some sleep soon as one with sleep problems I do relate - you need it. Glad you were all able to get your first shot we got ours a week or more ago now and so glad - well be glad to get the second on the 2nd of April. We might go out to eat but only if we happened to go early or late when there are a lot less people around then the normal dining times.

  8. Glad things with your mom are settling down a bit. I wake all times of the night too. The night I got the first Covid vaccine, I woke all night long, I felt anxious or something. Continue to keep you and your mom in my prayers.

  11. Santa's face is emerging! We, too, have gone from 60s back to winter again this past week. I'm looking forward to some stitching outside someday soon. So glad to hear you're on the vaccine path! We've both now had our second dose, but also continuing to be very careful.

  12. I am gladdened to read that your mum improved a little this week. It must be hard on you with everything that is going on and when you don't get enough sleep, well, it makes it hard to function. Your Santa is looking fabulous...and kindly. It's his eye and nose....and mouth. Love it! Wonderful you, your husband and your mum have started vaccination. As you say, there seems to always be a new variant, so I too wonder if life will be as we once knew.

  13. Your sewing is coming on great, how lovely to sit out on the porch in the sunshine, it seems ages since I sat out in the sun, it's still way too cold here. Great news about the vaccines and I'm glad you Mum is improving, I have sleep problems too I'm wide awake by 5 most mornings. Have a great week.

  15. Cathie: It sounds lovely to be able to stitch outdoors, soon we will be able to do the same.
Santa's face is starting to really show.
I will not be getting the shot.
So sorry you are having sleep problems, I never sleep well away from home.
I hope your Mother continues to improve.
    Have a lovely day

  16. Try some sleepy time tea. Celstial Seasoning is brand I use. Maybe start with 1/2 cup. Most sleep aids make me sleep 10 to 12 hours and feel terrible. But, the sleepy time tea just gives me a restful sleep. wake up normal hour and I have not felt drugged.
